IN
MEMORY OF KAYLA:
This weekend she
was found by a woman walking her child - she was tied to an unshaded tree,
panting for water. After exhausting her ideas for searching for her possible
owner, she contacted our rescue
for help. The woman dropped Kayla off at one
of our volunteers homes and that's when we realized that the Kayla's health
was a serious situation. She is all skin and bones. My volunteers kept her
overnite and fed her, but Kayla would just throw it back up after a few minutes.
I had them take her to our vet the next day to get a check up - the vet was
shocked by her appearance. After a visual physical, he said it worried him
that she had developed jaundice. He said that usually that's associated with
a severe infection, an enzyme deficiency, an abnormality of the dog's red blood
cells or a liver malfunction. It could also be anemia. She was also totally
dehydrated. He felt her belly and didn't like the lumps he felt either. She's
weighing in at less than 32 lb. They did blood work and x-rays. There is a
small obstruction in the intestines and the bloodwork results came abnormal
for the liver, one of the readings was so high that his machine wasn't even
able to track it. He said he was going to keep her overnight on IV, with glucose,
but that if there is liver failure, that there is no guarantee she's going
to make it. Sometimes the cells do regenerate, but the chance is slim. Today,
after speaking to the vet, it doesn't look good. It appears that this sweet
little girl was taking a turn for the worse and after long thought out considerations
it was best to let Kayla pass over the Rainbow Bridge. In just the few days
that she was with us - she touched the lives of the foster parents and the
vet. She will be missed.
